This weekend I’ll say goodbye to a dear friend.
I took my 2001 Silverado to the car wash on my lunch break today and cleaned up the interior as best I could. With 227,000 miles on the odometer, an already rebuilt transmission that I don’t 100% trust, and an mpg rating that is slightly better than Doug DeMuro’s Hummer, we decided it was time to move on.
It wasn’t my first car, but it might as well have been. My parents surprised me with it when I returned home from a school trip back in 2005. Obviously it was used, but it was the exact pickup I fell in love with at the dealership a couple weeks earlier.
In the years since it got to know the roads of Texas well. From Amarillo to Houston to San Antonio to El Paso — it’s seen almost every corner of this grand state... and about half of that weird state to the west where they like green chiles on everything (confession: I do to).
There have been times I hated it — parking in a metro area is never easy in anything bigger than a Mini — and it’s certainly seen batter days — the paint is chipped, scratched and faded, the carpet is stained in some spots, the leather interior is dried to the point of coming apart and the headlights randomly burn out.
Yet it was mine for 10 years. It was my steed as I conquered the West. And I’m going to miss it.

Ah...giving up cars. You will always remember those special cars and not so special cars. I had enough cash I decided that my ‘88 4Runner was finally getting long in the tooth and got a used Audi S4. I got my first car with AC when I was 26. That 4Runner was my dad’s originally and we went on many family trips, camping trips, and offroading. It was awesome and I was super sad when I sold it for almost a song after having it for 9 years. My dad was actually less pleased of who I sold it to...as apparently that guy worked at the same plant my dad did and he’d see it in the parking lot and would sigh as he walked past it. It was a good truck.
Having the Audi was a bonus, but there are days I still miss that old 4Runner. Well, I sold the Audi 5 years ago now...and some days I miss that Audi too over my current car.

Holy shit. I have an ‘04 Sierra, and I just realized that it’ll have been mine for 10 years in March.
